The Helen Spencer Award

THE HELEN SPENCER AWARD

The IWGA is pleased to announce the establishment of the Helen Spencer Junior Girls Award to annually honor an outstanding graduating high school senior with a financial contribution to her future education in the amount of $2000. The first award will be announced in May of 2020.

Currently 95 years old, Helen Spencer lives in Walworth, Wisconsin. She contacted the IWGA with a generous request seeking to provide a scholarship award to help young women attain continuing educational goals. Helen grew up during the “depression era” and remembers the financial struggles and hard times of the ‘30’s. There were very few educational or job opportunities for young ladies at that time.

Helen worked hard in many different endeavors, yet still found time to participate and compete in sports including taking up golf in her 30’s. She played in the IWGA State Amateur and Senior State Amateur Championships from 1958 to 1994 – spanning 36 years! Once health prohibited her from competing in the tournaments she continued to attend with her friend, Marilyn Butler. Helen loved the camaraderie and competition the IWGA championships provided and is remembered by many as a fun and worthy competitor. This she wishes to pass on to other young ladies.

The award criteria for selection includes: Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Sportsmanship.
