President’s Message

We, at the IWGA, like everyone else are looking forward to a better 2021. It was one of the most stressful years we have ever endured. We were forced to cancel the State Am in June but were able to hold the Junior and Senior Championships as scheduled. We had to make many provisions to those Championships in order to keep everyone safe. Running these Championships proved to be a major challenge for the committee. With that being said, we were so happy we pulled them off.

Starting 2021 we are hoping we can again hold our Championships safely. We will be implementing a new format for the State Amateur Championship. We feel this change will benefit players and bring a high-quality field to Pine Meadows in June. In recent years our Junior Championship has been outstanding. We are happy to be able to alternate between two fine venues for this Championship with Aldeen (Rockford) hosting the event this year and returning to Hickory Point (Decatur) in 2022. Our Senior Championship will be played at Pekin Country Club, where the first Senior Championship was played in 1970.

Along with the three Championship we run during the year, it is our mission to continue to support the game of golf for girls and women of Illinois. Through a generous donation from Helen Spencer, a former participate in our championships, we now will be giving two, two thousand scholarships to outstanding high school senior girls. With donations obtained from individuals and clubs for our Victory Fund, we were able to continue award grants to college women’s golf teams this past year. We also help our USGA state team qualifiers, along with supporting veteran’s programs and medical research.

There are numerous ways to contribute to the IWGA. You can donate your time at any of our Championships. You can contribute to the Victory Fund directly or via the John Deere Classic Birdies for Charity program or you can offer to be the liaison between your golf club or organization and the IWGA.

We hope you will consider these opportunities. The IWGA is a labor of love for the game of golf. If you share our vision and passion, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us for more information.

I am looking forward to sharing with you an outstanding year of golf and friendship.

Gail Hannam,

IWGA President
