Beth Weinstein of Highland Park Wins the 2009 Illinois State Women’s Amateur Championship

Kankakee, IL, June 19, 2009. It was a battle of the north and south in the final championship match of the 76th Women’s State Amateur at Kankakee Country Club. Chelsea Renee Harris, Metropolis, took an early 1 up lead after sinking a birdie putt on the 3rd hole. But Beth Weinstein of Highland Park won the next three holes and hole number 8 to take a 3 up lead. Harris, with a sharp putter in hand, won hole 14, number 16 with a birdie putt, and won hole 17 when Weinstein 3 putted. With the match even on the par three 18, Weinstein sunk a 6 footer for par to extend the match. Both players halved the next two holes to force a 21st hole. Harris found the sand trap on her tee shot and wasn’t able to convert her par putt. With Weinstein safely on the green with her tee shot, she closed out the tournament with a two putt par.

Both Weinstein and Harris advanced to today’s championship match by defeating two different opponents in match play held yesterday morning and afternoon
